What to Do for Cracked Heels

Heel fissures, also known as cracked heels, are the result of splitting and cracking on the skin of the heel. As the skin on the heel dries out, it loses its strength and elasticity, and it gets hard, dry, and flaky. Cracked heels can have a variety of causes that include standing for long periods of time, wearing shoes that don’t fit correctly, cold/dry weather, or obesity. If you are struggling with dry and cracked heels, applying moisturizer to the heels is the first key step in dealing with the situation. It is also important to use a pumice stone and/or liquid bandage on the affected area as well as avoiding harsh soaps and long harsh showers. In severe cases, cracked heels may require the help of a podiatrist who can help remove dead skin, prescribe stronger medicine, prescribe antibiotics, and suggest shoe inserts or heel pads. Therefore, if you are struggling with cracked heels don’t hesitate to visit a podiatrist for treatment recommendations.

If the skin on your feet starts to crack, you may want to see a podiatrist to find treatment. If you have any concerns, contact Chuc Dang, DPM from California . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Cracked Heels

It is important to moisturize your cracked heels in order to prevent pain, bleeding, and infection. The reason cracked heels form is because the skin on the foot is too dry to support the immense pressure placed on them. When the foot expands, the dry skin on the foot begins to split.

Ways to Help Heal Them

  • Invest in a good foot cream
  • Try Using Petroleum Jelly
  • Ease up on Soaps
  • Drink Plenty of Water

Ways to Prevent Cracked Heels

  • Moisturize After Showering
  • Skip a Shower
  • Keep Shower Water Lukewarm
  • Don’t Scrub Your Feet

If you are unsure how to proceed in treating cracked heels, seek guidance from a podiatrist. Your doctor will help you with any questions or information you may need.

Foot Pain Caused by Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is the body’s largest nerve. It runs from the lower back to the knees before branching into other nerves that extend to the feet and toes. When this nerve becomes pressured or compressed, it causes a condition known as sciatica which can cause radiating or electric pain starting in the lower back down to the toes. There may even be feelings of tingling or numbness. The many possible causes of sciatica include a herniated disc, a narrowing of the spinal column due to age (spinal stenosis), bad posture, trauma, nerve disorders, muscular strain, being overweight, and vertebral misalignment. Sciatica usually affects people aged 40 and older. Those who work in awkward positions are believed to be more at risk of developing sciatica. If you believe you may have sciatica, it’s wise to contact a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis. Treatment to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve may include massage and/or physical therapy, stretching, medication, biomechanical adjustments with orthotics, or possibly even surgery, depending on the cause.

Prevention Tips for Gout

When uric acid builds up in the joints, usually the big toe, it forms a very painful type of arthritis known as gout. This happens when there is too much uric acid in the blood, and the acid forms crystals around the joints causing them to be stiff, irritated and painful. The main key to preventing gout is a healthy lifestyle, which includes maintaining a healthy weight, getting enough vitamin C, and avoiding foods that are high in purines. Patients who are struggling with pain in their big toe and believe it is due to gout would be wise to consult with a podiatrist. The doctor will assist in managing the condition, as well as provide options for pain relief.

Gout is a painful condition that can be treated. If you are seeking treatment, contact Chuc Dang, DPM from California . Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.

How to Spot Foot Problems in Your Child

Sometimes children experience foot problems but either don’t know it, or don’t know how to explain them. Here are a few ways parents can be aware of actual, or potential, foot concerns. If your child seems unusually tired while running or playing, it may be a sign of flat feet. Sometimes children, especially between the ages of 8 and 14, will opt out of an activity because of heel pain due to inflammation or muscle strain from repetitive stress. Check your child’s toes for ingrown toenails, redness, swelling, blisters, or discoloration on a regular basis. If your child trips or falls a lot, it may indicate a neuromuscular or balance problem. Because children may not bring these conditions to your attention, it is a good idea to schedule an appointment with a podiatrist as a regular part of your child’s health regime.

The health of a child’s feet is vital to their overall well-being. If you have any questions regarding foot health, contact Chuc Dang, DPM of California . Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy

  • Make sure their shoes fit properly
  • Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
  • Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
  • Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
  • Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
  • Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
  • Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
  • Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.
